Club Atlético de Madrid full-back Sílvio is expected to miss the remainder of the campaign after undergoing surgery to resolve a troublesome knee injury.
The 24-year-old – who has featured in Europe just once since the start of the UEFA Europa League group stage – finally opted for an operation in Porto after spending the last three months feeling discomfort in his left knee. "The procedure went very well; we found a tear in the lateral medial ligament as well as one in the knee capsule and we repaired both," said the surgeon, Doctor José Carlos Noronha.
Although his club have not made an estimate, reports suggest Sílvio will not play for Diego Simeone's side again this season while the five-times capped player faces a race against time to be considered for Portugal's UEFA EURO 2012 squad. Atlético visit Beşiktaş JK on Thursday, holding a 3-1 lead in their UEFA Europa League round of 16 tie.
